"I am holding out my heart to you.
If you are brave and hold out your heart too,
One day our hearts will spread all over the world."

Carolyn Weltman is a mixed-media artist who uses oils, watercolours, charcoal, graphite and gesso as well as her computer to illustrate her innermost thoughts, poems and ideas. Until recently, her erotic art has been a constant fixture on the streets of New York's famous Soho art district and in Union Square since 1998.  Carolyn is a persistent warrior, determined to bring her art directly to the people.

A favorite among New York natives as well as international visitors, her art is consistently seen and purchased at various exhibits and auctions, including the prestigious New York Academy of Art's annual juried exhibition and auction, "Take Home a Nude" which was held most recently at Phillips de Pury Auction House in New York.

Carolyn has been interviewed on international television, radio and internet web casts and her artwork is the subject of documentaries as well as featured on numerous websites.

Mixed with her poetry, Carolyn's lush and sensual, beautifully rendered erotic illustrations make her website “Sophi's Grand Empire” (www.artforengineers.com) a uniquely healing place to visit.

Carolyn's work is regularly featured both as illustrations, on book jackets and in many national and international magazines including: Penthouse International; Cupido; Eroticus; Allspice; Extreme Fetish, Diverse International, Soho Journal and most recently in Vermont Woman and NYArts Magazine.

Carolyn was awarded best in illustration and fine art at the Rear Views Exhibition at the Leslie-Lohman Gallery in Soho, New York. She recently won awards for her work in the 2008 ES the World's Greatest Erotic Art.  After showing at the Tom of Finland Erotic Art Show, Carolyn was asked to contribute a piece of her work to the permanent exhibition at the Tom of Finland museum. In November 2002 she was awarded Erotic Artist of the Year 2002 - 2003 at the Erotic Awards held in London, England. In February 2003, CityTV (Canada) aired a special featuring Carolyn and her work. The show subsequently aired in the UK in June 2004.

In December 2003 and again in November 2005, Art at Large, New York, NY presented a solo show of her work and concurrently, one of her pieces was displayed at the Museum of Sex in New York City.  In 2007, her most recent solo show was held at the Musuem of Porn in Art, Zurich, Switzerland. In 2007 two of her drawings were placed in the permanent collection of the Kinsey Institute Erotic Art Museum.

Permanently represented by Art at Large, NYC; Orbit Gallery Space, NJ; CryBaby Gallery, NJ; The DrawingRoom, Chesham, Bucks, UK; Museum of PorninArt, Zurich, Switzerland. Carolyn also shows her work regularly at exhibits, art fairs and shows both internationally and within the United States

Artist’s Statement

My perspective begins poetically with me alone. It extends out to the mood of my models, then to my drawing, my painting and ultimately to the living spaces of my patrons. I am utterly and unashamedly ecumenical in my fascination with the human form and the imaginative capacity for loving of its inhabitants.

As I=ve loosened my work onto the world, I have encountered, confronted, defended, befriended and been befriended.  All the while creating a virtuous circle of inspiration that flows back to me in direct proportion to my evolving ability to tell the truth about how things really are for people inside themselves and how they might express it if they could, if they were as free in the rest of their lives as they are in my work.

Although I=m not married to any categories, schools or aesthetic principles, the thought of which I find anti-evolutionary, I am fond of looking to Velasquez and Van Gogh in painting, and, not surprisingly, Leonardo for drawing.  Modigliani for my mood.
